The office holiday party is (thankfully) changing to become more inclusive and respect employees’ personal time. Because of an increasingly diverse workforce, these contemporary events focus less on one specific cultural tradition. Instead, companies invite employees to participate in entertaining activities such as sports or dance lessons or art or cooking classes. Many businesses include employees’ family members too.
I was delighted to contribute my perspective to the article. I shared how my holiday traditions, rooted in my Asian heritage, create meaningful bonds with my team. I host dim sum lunches in Vancouver’s Chinatown for my team members and their spouses/partners. Not everyone is familiar with the tradition of dim sum, but it’s close to my heart, and I wanted to share the experience with my team. We spend hours relaxing and enjoying the meal together. It feels like a big family dinner.
